Udyam Registration 2026: Free MSME Registration, Step by Step
If you run a small business in India and you are not yet Udyam-registered, you are leaving real money and protection on the table — and it costs nothing to fix. Udyam is the government's MSME registration. It is free, fully online, and takes about 15 minutes. This guide walks you through it start to finish, plus the benefits most owners do not realise they are missing.
Do it on the official site only
The only official portal is udyamregistration.gov.in. It is free. Dozens of look-alike sites charge ₹500 to ₹3,000 to do exactly what you can do yourself in 15 minutes. You never need to pay anyone. What Udyam registration actually is
Udyam replaced the old Udyog Aadhaar / MSME registration in 2020. It classifies your business as Micro, Small or Medium based on two things: investment in plant, machinery or equipment, and annual turnover. As of 2026 the limits are broadly: Micro up to ₹2.5 cr investment and ₹10 cr turnover; Small up to ₹25 cr and ₹100 cr; Medium up to ₹125 cr and ₹500 cr. Most Indian SMBs are Micro.
You get a permanent Udyam Registration Number and an e-certificate with a QR code. It never expires and does not need renewal.
Step by step: how to register
- Go to udyamregistration.gov.in and click "For New Entrepreneurs who are not Registered yet as MSME".
- Enter your Aadhaar number and name exactly as on Aadhaar, then verify with the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile.
- Select the type of organisation (proprietor, partnership, LLP, private limited, etc.) and enter your PAN. The portal validates it and pulls your details.
- Fill in business details: name, address, bank account, main activity (manufacturing or services), and NIC code for what you do.
- Enter investment and turnover — for GST-registered businesses these are auto-filled from your returns. Submit and verify the final OTP.
- Download your Udyam certificate. That is it — no payment, no upload of documents.
The benefits owners actually feel
- Delayed-payment protection. Registered MSMEs are legally owed payment within 45 days; buyers who delay owe compound interest. This alone is worth registering for if you sell B2B.
- Cheaper, collateral-free credit. Priority-sector lending, CGTMSE collateral-free loans, and lower interest rates.
- Tenders and large-buyer onboarding. Government tenders reserve quotas for MSMEs, and big private buyers increasingly ask for a Udyam number before adding you as a vendor.
- Subsidies and scheme access — technology upgradation, ISO certification reimbursement, electricity concessions in many states.
Common mistakes that get applications stuck
Aadhaar name mismatch (use the exact spelling on Aadhaar), a mobile number not linked to Aadhaar (you will not get the OTP), and choosing the wrong NIC activity code. If your turnover crosses a slab later, the portal reclassifies you automatically — you do not re-register.
After Udyam: get your operations in order
Registration unlocks benefits, but growth comes from running the business well — capturing every lead, sending GST invoices on time, and following up until you are paid. That is exactly the gap a simple CRM fills. Once you are Udyam-registered and GST-ready, put your leads, invoices and payments in one place instead of a diary and three WhatsApp chats.
