GSTIN: Definition, Meaning & Guide for Indian Businesses

GSTIN is the 15-character Goods and Services Tax Identification Number assigned to every business registered under GST in India.

What is GSTIN?

GSTIN stands for Goods and Services Tax Identification Number. It is a unique 15-character alphanumeric code that the Government of India assigns to every business that registers under GST. The first 2 digits are your state code (for example, 27 for Maharashtra, 29 for Karnataka). The next 10 characters are your PAN. The 13th character is your entity number within the same PAN (used when one PAN has multiple GST registrations in different states). The 14th character is always Z. The last character is a check digit. You must print your GSTIN on every tax invoice you issue, and you need a GSTIN to claim input tax credit on the GST you pay to your own suppliers.
